A risk-off trade is sending Treasury yields lower and flatter across the curve this morning, with 5-10 year yields down 9 basis points at of 8:40am ET. S&P 500 futures are down 0.72%, and NASDAQ futures are down 1.4%. The primary catalysts for the risk aversion are the meltdown in the cryptocurrency market, as well as weaker than expected GDP results from the U.K. As we’ve discussed many times in recent weeks/months, there’s also strong technical factors at play in the Treasury market as well, as a relatively high level of short positions get stopped out in the rally, exacerbating the move. On the data front, April PPI was largely in line with expectations, although the core figure did come in below expectations. In Fed news, the Senate confirmed Philip Jefferson by a vote of 91-7 to join the Fed’s Board of Governors. Jefferson is an economist and administrator at Davidson College in North Carolina.
