This morning’s data was largely in line with expectations, including the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge (PCE).
Personal income rose 0.4% in July, including a 0.6% increase in wages and salaries (+0.1% in June). Inflation-adjusted (real) personal spending was up 0.3% m/m in July, also matching expectations. For inflation, core PCE rose 0.3% m/m and 2.9% y/y. Core PCE services inflation excluding housing, touted by multiple Fed leaders as a focus metric, was up 3.3% y/y in July. Treasury yields were up 1-3 bps (curve steeper) to start the day, and those levels are generally holding in the immediate reaction to this morning’s data. There will be no official early close in the bond market ahead of holiday weekend, but trading volumes and general liquidity should be relatively light as the day progresses.
