An upside surprise for January CPI is fueling a selloff in benchmark yields this morning.
Headline CPI rose 0.5% m/m, fueled by a 1.1% increase in energy costs (gas +1.8%), and egg prices surged 15.2%, pushing food costs higher. The core measure rose 0.4% m/m versus expectations of a 0.3% increase. Core prices were pushed higher by shelter costs (+0.4% m/m), auto insurance costs (+2.0%), and used autos (+2.2%). On a year-over-year basis, headline CPI was up 3%, and core CPI was up 3.3%, both higher than the prior month and above expectations. This report certainly creates no added urgency for Fed leaders to ease interest rate policy in the coming months, although things can quickly change if policymakers remain more reactive to shorter-term data trends. Treasury yields are up 8-10 basis points in the initial reaction, and fed funds futures are now pricing just one 25 basis point rate cut in December.
