Financial markets are assessing risks of potential military intervention in Iran and digesting multiple economic reports this morning.

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that President Trump is considering a “limited military strike” on Iran in the coming days. Oil prices have risen to the highest level in six months in recent days in response, and the price of gold has moved back above $5,000 per ounce.

Personal income and spending were generally in line with expectations in December, but the PCE report showed core inflation rising 0.4% m/m, the hottest reading since last February. The initial estimate of Q4 GDP showed a 1.4% q/q (annualized) increase in topline growth versus expectations of a 2.8% gain. The government shutdown was the primary culprit for the softness, with government consumption reducing overall growth by 0.9%. Personal consumption was in line with expectations at a solid 2.4%, and business investment was up 3.8%, led by AI infrastructure buildout spending. The inflation measure within the GDP report was also hotter than expected.
