Treasury yields were modestly higher overnight, leading up to this morning’s data releases.
Personal income and spending were both lower than expected in May. Income was down 0.4% versus expectations of a 0.3% gain, including a 0.6% decline in disposable income (income minus taxes). Wages and salaries were more normal at +0.4% m/m, but government transfer payments fell 2.2%, including a 7.3% decline in social security income. Real personal spending fell 0.3% m/m in May versus expectations of a flat monthly reading, the weakest reading since January. The pullback in spending was likely related to consumers pulling some spending forward in prior months ahead of tariffs on certain goods (e.g., autos), but softer spending on services (-0.03% m/m) is perhaps more of a concern. The market response to this morning’s data has been somewhat muted, given the noise potentially affecting monthly data readings in recent months.
