Nonfarm payrolls rose 139,000 in May, 13,000 more than expected, and the unemployment rate held steady at 4.2% (up 0.057% to 4.244% on an unrounded basis).
Average hourly earnings rose 0.4% m/m (0.3% expected) and 3.9% y/y (3.7% expected). A negative within the report was the 2-month revision to payrolls growth of -95,000. The healthcare sector, which should be less impacted by tariffs, added another 62,000 jobs in May, slightly above the 60,000 average for the first four months of the year. Leisure and hospitality added 44,000 jobs last month. Treasury yields are 6-8 basis points higher in the immediate reaction to the release, and fed funds futures are pricing a reduced probability of a September Fed rate cut (0.17% vs. 0.24% yesterday). S&P 500 futures are up 0.8% 30 minutes ahead of the open.
