Estimated

Nonfarm payrolls added 177,000 jobs in April, 39,000 more than expected, and the unemployment rate held steady at 4.2%.

Average hourly earnings rose less than expected at a 0.2% m/m rate, and on a year-over-year basis, wage growth was unchanged at 3.8%. The only real negative aspect of the report was a -58,000 revision to the prior two months’ payrolls growth, but overall, it was another picture of a US labor market on solid footing. Whether that changes materially in the coming months related to tariff policies/uncertainty remains to be seen. Treasury yields are up 4-5 basis points in a near-parallel fashion following the release, and S&P 500 futures are up 0.75% as of 8:44 am ET.
