Treasury yields are 6-9 basis points higher to start the day in a nearly parallel fashion (the biggest move in 5-7yr part of the curve).
Potential nominees for cabinet positions in the Trump Administration continue to be floated to the media. This morning, Bloomberg is reporting that some of President-elect Trump’s key advisors are backing Scott Bessent for Treasury secretary, who runs the hedge fund Key Square Group. The general speculation had previously been that Trump would tap hedge fund manager John Paulson or Cantor Fitzgerald CEO Howard Lutnick for Treasury. As it impacts the banking and mortgage industries, one area of focus is whether there will be a renewed attempt to recapitalize and privatize Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac (FMs). Former FHFA Director Mark Calabria was pushing for this later in the first Trump term before being replaced by Biden early in his administration. John Paulson has publicly voiced support for privatization, but it will likely take some time to get the FMs to the levels of capital necessary to release them from conservatorship, assuming this is indeed a priority of the Trump White House. If this is a priority, it will require much cooperation between the Treasury Secretary and the FHFA Director.
