Treasury yields are unchanged to slightly lower following yesterday’s severe selloff.
It was indeed a tale of two markets. Stocks surged higher on the election results, with the Dow closing 3.57% higher, but Treasuries went the other direction, which was not unexpected given how the market had been pricing for a “Red sweep” in the weeks leading up to the election. Attention now shifts to today’s FOMC meeting. The Fed is expected to move forward with a 25 basis point cut today, but it would not be surprising if they paused at this meeting or hinted at a pause at the December meeting, given the recent strength in the economic data since the last meeting in September. Powell will undoubtedly be questioned about the impact of the election results on the economy and Fed policy, which he will likely dance around and reiterate Fed independence from political matters. Lastly, initial jobless claims were essentially as expected last week, coming in at 221,000.
