Treasury yields are modestly lower as the market digests several data releases this morning.
Personal spending was higher than expected in September, but yesterday’s Q3 GDP report and the earlier retail sales data implied as much. Personal income growth was in line with expectations, rising 0.3% m/m in September. Core PCE rose 0.3% m/m, as expected, and on a year-over-year basis, core PCE was up 2.7%, slightly higher than expected. Separately, initial jobless claims unexpectedly fell 12,000 last week to 216,000 (230,000 expected). This is the lowest reading for weekly claims since mid-May. Offsetting these surprises was the Employment Cost Index (ECI), which rose 0.8% q/q vs. expectations of a 0.9% increase. This was the lowest reading for ECI since Q2 2021. ECI is a more comprehensive measure of wage inflation that tracks bonuses and other benefits, making it a preferred metric of the Fed.
