Understanding Unrealized Losses on AFS Investments

Wednesday, February 23, 2022

11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. CST

The potential of a rising rate environment has mounting unrealized losses on the minds of fixed income investors yet again. If you’ve been actively investing over the last 2 years, you’ve probably been anticipating this day and the impending questions from senior management and the Board. Before you look to quickly extract remaining unrealized gains, or hold off on the next investment in anticipation of higher yields down the road, take time to reconsider the reality of unrealized losses on available-for-sale investments and how prudent portfolio management makes rising rate environments less worrisome. After this session, you’ll be ready to tackle tough questions about that “UGL” entry and armed with a disciplined investment approach, no matter when and how far rates rise.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the difference between unrealized losses and investment performance
  • Identify the benefits of depository funding in a rising rate environment
  • Gauge the opportunity cost of rising rate investor paralysis
  • Recognize the importance of reinvestment and a sound investment process in long-term portfolio performance
