Treasury yields are drifting lower following a tamer than expected inflation report for January, and U.S. equity futures are up 45-50 basis points amid a mild risk-on tone ahead of the open. The January CPI report revealed softness in the core measure (excluding food & energy), which was unchanged from the prior month versus expectations of a 0.2% gain. On a year-over-year basis, core prices were up 1.4%, down from 1.6% the prior month and 1.5% expected. The components weighing more heavily on the January data were new/used vehicle sales and airfare. The softness isn’t a major surprise given the Covid-related restrictions of the last few months, and year-over-year inflation measures are expected to rise in Q2 given the base effect alone.
