Retail sales were softer than expected in May, and the April report was revised lower as well.
Headline sales rose 0.1% m/m in May (0.3% expected), weighed down by a 2.2% m/m decline in gas station receipts. The retail sales control group, which is used in the GDP calculation, rose 0.4% in May (0.5% expected), and the April figure was revised down from -0.3% to -0.5%. This was a modest miss versus expectations in May, but when also considering the April revisions, it follows the trend of softer consumer spending going back to February. Treasury yields are down 3-5 basis points in the immediate reaction to the data release. Six different Fed leaders are scheduled to speak today.
