Equity futures are selling off and Treasuries rallying again in premarket trading this morning, as private-sector payroll data from ADP missed estimates.
The 37,000 job increase fell below the 114,000 consensus, led by a dip in healthcare, education, and manufacturing hiring. Despite the slowest pace of private payroll growth in roughly 2 years, wage gains continued to show positive signals. Workers who found new employment received a median increase in wages of 7%, while job stayers saw their pay increase 4.5%. Initial and continuing jobless claims data is due tomorrow (6/5), and non-farm payrolls coming to the following day (6/6).
Elsewhere, President Trump, in a Truth Social post early Wednesday morning, said Xi Jinping is “…extremely hard to make a deal with”, as it appears the two countries aren’t closing in on a trade deal. The expectation is that both Trump and Xi will meet later this week to negotiate directly.
After a 7-year wait, Wells Fargo was relieved of the asset cap levied by regulators yesterday, allowing for further growth in trading, investment banking, consumer lending, and wealth management.
