Long-end Treasury yields are 2-3 basis points lower to start the day, and the price of gold eclipsed $4,000 an ounce for the first time.

Gold prices are up 22% since August 18 and up 55% YTD. Just two years ago, the precious metal was pricing below $2,000 and the recent runup coincides with Fed independence concerns and questions of US fiscal stability. Renowned investors Ray Dalio and Ken Griffen voiced this sentiment during separate speeches this week, with both suggesting that gold has become a preferred safe haven asset over the US dollar. Later today, the minutes of the September 17 FOMC minutes will be released and could shed more light on the current divide between the doves and hawks as it relates to the path of Fed interest rate policy. There will also be four different Fed leaders speaking today.
