Core inflation was reported softer than expected in December.

Core CPI rose 0.2% m/m in December versus median expectations of a 0.3% increase (and some pre-release whispers of a 0.4% reading). Headline CPI rose 0.3% m/m, as expected. On a year-over-year basis, both headline and core CPI held steady at 2.7% and 2.6%, respectively. The core reading was pushed lower by a 1.1% decline in used car/truck prices in December, and IT hardware and services fell 1.3%. Household furnishings were reported to have fallen 0.5% m/m. An initial rally in Treasuries after the release of the report has faded with yields now unchanged to slightly higher as economists and market participants dig deeper into the data.
